About Charles Mathis
I am an Artist and Industrial Designer with a background in fine art fabrication and education. Utilizing a vast array of skills and over 20 years experience, I help artists and designers realize their ideas. Equally versed in traditional craft techniques and emerging technologies, I enjoy exploring the void between the physical and digital, between an idea and its manifestation.
From 2005-2010 I was the Technical Instructor for the Program in Art Culture and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, teaching skills such as mold-making, welding and digital fabrication. Additionally, I designed and managed dedicated workspaces, and fabricated custom furniture for classrooms and studios. A continued love for designing well-used workspaces led to the co-development of California Carts, an artist-driven platform and studio that designs and manufactures furniture for creative spaces.
In 2012 I was the first US citizen to earn a Masters in Product Design from the ECAL in Lausanne Switzerland. Following my Masters I have collaborated and worked with a wide range of creative clients including Studio Wieki Somers, Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin, Telfar Clemens, Andrea Zittel, Andrea Rosen, Sprueth Magers and Standard Sculpture.
My personal work has been shown internationally at design fairs, galleries and institutions such as the Milan Furniture Fair, Gallery Libbie Sellers, and the ICA in Boston, MA.
